I hate to break it to you, kids: a lot of the stuff we consider cutting-edge scene fashion here in the States is probably old news in Japan. No worries: just take some scene hair inspiration from these Japanese Harajuku kids.

Harajuku Girls

Gwen Stefani, lead singer of the pop band No Doubt, has lead a Madonna-esque fashion revolt in both her recent videoclip for her single What You Waiting For and her solo album Love, Angel, Music, Baby. Her catchy 80's inspired popish tunes, platinum blonde hair and Like A Virgin kit out on the album cover art only reinforce her homage to the material girl, even though it may be somewhat tongue in cheek.

But its her references to the Japanese Harajuku Girls peppered throughout the album and on one track in particular that has drawn interest from a diverse range of commentators.

So who are these Harajuku Girls anyway?

The Harajuku District of Tokyo and in particular Takeshita Street, a narrow street lined with shops is home to these funky fashionistas. Since the end of World War II, "consumerism" and "consumption" have become the national past-time for most Japanese and in particular teenage girls who often live at home with their parents well into their twenties. Their rent free existence provides them with the enough funds to flock to Harajuku every weekend, where they transform themselves into Lolita-esque baby doll caracitures.

It's all a sort of a pop-art meets pop-culture meets Western decadence kinda street where often a t-shirt with a western image like Mickey Mouse can go for several hundred dollars a pop. This constant pursuit of rock n roll pop star hipness extends to teenage boys too. They in turn have opted for the western inspired hip-hop culture of disheveled jeans hanging half way to their knees, caps at all angles on their heads and of course lots and lots of bling.

Often the net result looks like something out of a Manga comic book as the fashionistas of Harajuku compete to look less human and more iconic. Not concerned about what we in the West may see as a conflict of style over substance, Harajuku Girls unlike the Goths, punks and bond girls that came before are not about rebellion from society. No, in fact these girls, like most Japanese, are often extremely polite and happy to pose for photographs with inquisitive tourists who gather every Sunday to take happy snaps of these super-model caricatures.

For the Girls of Harajuku, their most extreme vice may be a simple cigarette.

Harajuku Girls

Harajuku girls, used to identify girls who gather in Harajuku district, Tokyo, Japan. Their costumes is in several different styles of clothing that originated in the culture of Japan's major cities.

The term is not only monopolized by those who gather in the district themselves, but has become a relatively popular expression in the United States. Popular use originated from the American singer Gwen Stefani's 2004 Love.Angel.Music.Baby album, which brought attention to Stefani's entourage of four supposed "Harajuku Girls" who were hired to portray the look, three of whom are Japanese and one of whom is Japanese American.

The Harajuku Girls are four young women who were hired in 2004 as backup dancers for American singer Gwen Stefani's Love. Angel. Music. Baby. album The "Harajuku Girls" have continued to appear alongside Stefani, and are featured in the music videos for "What You Waiting For?", "Rich Girl", "Hollaback Girl", "Luxurious", "Crash", "Wind It Up", "The Sweet Escape", and "Now That You Got It".

Coincidentally, both Love and Music have worked with Namie Amuro at some time, Music as a member of the group Super Monkeys and Love as Amuro's dancer for a period.

Harajuku Girls - THE GIRLS (L.A.M.B)

Maya Chino (stage name "Love") grew up in Tokyo. She started out doing ballet when she was three years old. Before dancing with Gwen Stefani, she was a backup dancer for South Korean singer BoA.

Jennifer Kita (stage name "Angel"), born 1986, is a Japanese-American from Los Angeles, California. After graduating high school, Jennifer moved to San Diego and studied hip-hop at Mesa College. She later joined the dance troupe Culture Shock San Diego, and performed with them for two years.

Rino Nakasone (stage name "Music"), born June 10, 1979, grew up in Okinawa. She became interested in dance after watching music videos by Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson and mimicking their moves. At the age of nineteen, she went to Los Angeles to study dance. She later taught dance at a performing arts centers, and formed the dance group "Beat Freaks".

Mayuko Kitayama (stage name "Baby"), born February 17, 1983, grew up in Osaka. She eventually moved to New York, where she practiced in several dancing studios, after dancing in Japan for several years.

"Hi, I'm Love. My Japanese name is Maya, I'm named after Budda's mother. Maya means Love in Hindi, Gwen probably sensed it from me. I started ballet when I was three, I really really wanted to enroll for a ballet course in the US. My dance skills allowed me to enter into that school.

But my academy record was poor, so I failed. I was so sad, I was crying crying and then I lost my enthusiasm for ballet. I started HIP HOP dance instead, I love HIP HOP music, my enthusiasm exploded through HIP HOP. I decided to become a HIP HOP dancer.

Harajuku is the place for young Japanese people to show their uniqueness, through dance performance, music and especially through fashion. Young designers gather in Harajuku and sell their clothes there.

There is no place like Harajuku in Tokyo. One day I saw many many popstar posters over everywhere in Harajuku while I was shopping. I saw a huge billboard too, then suddenly I thought, "She needs me, she needs me".

When I landed in Los Angeles a car was waiting for me, "It's Gwen!". When we talked I knew my instinct was right. I had never been concious of being Japanese but in Gwen world I had to be aware of my nationality. It was great. I can express my background through HIP HOP dance which I love most in my life." About Jenny
Jenny grew up in Torrance, L.A where she began her early dance training in ballet, tap and jazz. Following high school, she moved to San Diego where she explored the style of hip-hop dance at various dance studios and at Mesa College.

Jenny furthered her dance and performance experience as a member of the internationally known troupe Culture Shock San Diego for 2 years. In 2001, Jenny joined the San Diego based dance company UrbanFX as a staff member and dance member.

While on UrbanFX, she not only contributed her dancing skills, but also her fashion sense as the company's stylist. Now living in her hometown of Torrance, Jenny is a part of Funkanometry Dance Company. Music, fashion, and art are her biggest interests outside of dance.

Interveiw with Angel

"Hey what's up I'm Angel and I'm with the Harajuku Girls. I'm from L.A, I was born and raised there. I started dancing when I was three, like ballet and tap, but I really didn't start dancing Hip Hop until I moved to San Diego and I started dancing for a performing Hip Hop crew.
I first realised that I was part of Gwens' fantasy world when I was in Amoeba records (a store) on Sunset, I was walking down the asle, the racks of CDs just turned into bushes.



Then this maze appeared and the walls were made of bushes. Then I see this white rabbit run by, then Gwen Stefani's following it and I'm like, "What the heck is she doing here, this's crazy!?!". Of course I was curious, I had to run after them and I started chasing her and she was chasing the white rabbit, this other Japanese girl was following her too.

It was just in this dreamworld. Gwen named me Angel, one idea is because I'm from the city of angels, I look out for others and an angelic trait of mine is that I guess I make people realise there's always two sides to the story, I kinda like the mediator making people see the other side of things you know.

One of my favourite parts about living in Gwen Stefani's fantasy world is that I'm surrounded by these three Japanese girls that are teaching me so much about my heritage because I'm fourth generation American, I didn't speak a lick of Japanese when I first started and they're just speaking Japanese all around me. Music is the goofiest, silliest person I know.

Music is very like straight up, like I'll ask for her advice and she'll just give it to me straight up even if she thinks it's gonna hurt me, she keeps is real. Love is the perfect name for love because she's so sweet and caring and free spirited.

About Rino
Rino was born and raised in Okinawa, Japan. She made her way to Los Angeles in 1991 to pursue her dance dreams. Her hard work and dedication have lead to her becoming one of the most well respected dancers in L.A. She currently dances for 2 all women dance crews, "Best Kept Secrets" and "Beat Freaks". Gwen Stefani is but one of her dancer credits, she has also worked with, Britney Spears, Missy Elliot, Mary J Blige and many more.

"What's up, I'm Music from the Harajuku Girls. Yay! So why is my name Music? Ok, I'll tell you why. One day Gwen and I went to dinner at the Japanese restaurant. At the table she stared at me and said, "You are Music".

So I said, "Cool!, OK", cause I always love to dance and I love music very much. I think, you know, we just have a special connection. I was a big big fan of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and TLC.

I learned how to dance from them on TV, I studied by myself nobody tought me how to dance except them and their dancers. I am originally from Okinawa, Japan, Yay! People from Okinawa are like this you know.

You guys wanna know how I met the Gwen? Yeah, I'll tell you! I was jogging on main street in Okinawa called Ouksaidori. I suddenly hear this "Tick tock, tick tock!", "What the hell is this?". Then I looked back and I saw this lady singing, "I'm just a girl!" "Tick tock, tick tock". She was chasing me, I said, "Hell no!" she can not catch up with me! But I had already been in her fantasy world, "Oh my goodness".

The best thing about being in the Harajuku girls is that I love the performances very much so I'm totally happy that I can dance as much as possible. And one more thing, I can appeal our dance to the world of Japanese, it is very honoured. I am very lucky to get this opportunity, oh one more thing, I can be around Gwen all the time! You jealous?" "Hey what's up, I'm Baby from the Harajuku Girls and I'm originally from Mishoigarkouoru city in Japan. I had been dancing in Japan but I felt something was missing, I moved to New York and there I practised dancing alot at the dancing studio.

One day I got a phonecall from the owner of that studio, and she said, "You can't stay here! Go and get outta here right now!". I was so upset and got back to her, "OK I'm outta here right now" and I cried so hard and packed up everything and got on the plane. But the plane landed in London, I dunno why but in London I dressed like... with a bra and funny and fake eyelashess.

I also took pictures of myself and took pictures to use for CD jackets. Then I was invited to her stage, now I'm here! Gwen named me Baby, the reason why is maybe because I'm the youngest member in the Harajuku Girls. I always follow after the three older members, who follow after Gwen.

I love touching Gwen's butt and I'm so jealous of her body, she has such a perfect butt and her face is so cute! The most wonderfull thing about being in the Harajuku Girls I think is the great co-operation between American popstar Gwen and our Japanese dancers.

At the same time we can appeal to our public too, in karate which only Japanese people know.
